Markdown compatibility mode

What does this setting do? I can't find any reference to it.

    If you view the 'Styles Bar' with and without this setting on you can see the difference. Other than the following differences all other markdown is the same between the two:

    Markup Compatibility Mode Off:

    *Bold*
    /Italic/
    _Underline_
    -Strike-
    - Todo

    Markup Compatibility Mode On:

    **Bold**
    *Italic*
    ~Underline~
    ~~Strike~~
    - [ ] Todo
